What is The Gourmet Escape?
The Margaret River Gourmet Escape food and wine festival began as a 4-day event in 2012. The aim was to showcase all the delectable food and wine destinations available in Western Australia while highlighting the Margaret River region. The plan was an immediate success and surpassed all expectations.
Each seceding year has seen the annual festival grow in both the number of vendors and visitors. Along the way, this extraordinary food and wine celebration has earned Australian Event Awards in 2017 and 2015, and both the Gold and Silver Perth Airport WA Tourism Awards in 2017. Marco Pierre White, a 3 Michelin star chef and television personality defines the Gourmet Escape as “the greatest food event on earth”.
For 2019, the Gourmet Escape in the Margaret River area will feature over 50 events with the visitor attendance expected to top 20,000. This year’s extravaganza will continue to present a Who’s Who of international and local culinary celebrities, palate-pleasing local produce and foods, award-winning wines and breweries, special event concepts, and plenty of live music. Events begin early in the day and last into the twilight hours all weekend long.

We have selected 7 different top venues that will help when considering local produce, food sampling, alcohol, workshops, twilight dining, seafood and meat pairing, and a cabernet tasting and long lunch with celebrity wine aficionados.
1. Local Produce:
The exhibits at the Gourmet Village features the best taste pleasing local product. One exhibit, The Little Kitchen presented by the Rapids Landing Primary School is located at the Little Kitchen tent in the Gourmet Village and is taught by children for children.
This is a fun time event for the whole family. There are 5 sessions on Saturday and Sunday that last 30 minutes and show you how to plant basil and how to make your own plant-based foods.
2. Food Sampling:
Sunset, Beats & Bites is an outdoor, beachside party featuring 2 of Perth’s most popular wood-fired restaurants, Tiny’s Restaurant and the Monsterella Pizzeria. There are 2 bite-size food tastings and a selection of new-wave Western Australian wine samplings on Friday and Saturday evenings, beginning at 6:30 PM.
The event is located at the White Elephant Café on Gnarabup Road in Margaret River WA. Beachfront alfresco tables, beachside dancing to favourite tunes organised by local DJs, and plenty of scenic, twilight photo opportunities.
3. Alcohol: This venue includes wine, beer, and gin.
- Wine: The Grand Marquee Wine Tastings at the Gourmet Village are 2-hour wine tasting sessions on Saturday and Sunday that feature the award-winning wines from Western Australia’s top wineries. These sessions are conducted by local viticulturists and renowned wine connoisseurs.
- Beer: The Battle of the Breweries occurs on Saturday and Sunday at the Besk tent in the Gourmet Village. The 8 separate 30 minute, head-to-head battles highlight brews from local craft breweries and the guests will decide which brewery wins each round.
- Gin: The Create Your Own Gin with Old Young’s is an experience not to be missed. This
exciting, creative adventure happens at the Old Young’s tent in the Gourmet Village on Saturday and Sunday.The 45-minute sessions, available 5 times each day, begin with an introduction to gin and the sampling of 3 premium gins. The tasting is followed by a blending phase where you will create your very own bespoke gin that is put into a 200mL bottle for you to take with you at the end of the event. Don’t forget to personalise your creation with a special name.
The Village Workshops presented by the Salt & Company Cooking School happens at the Salt & Company tent in the Gourmet Village on Saturday and Sunday. There will be 5 45-minute sessions each day. Here you’ll learn useful kitchen techniques that will last a lifetime. Learn how to preserve produce, make your own gnocchi and ricotta curds, and how to pickle seasonal vegetables. These workshops are for adults only because of the sharp cutlery used.
5. Twilight Dining:
The Dining by Twilight at Margaret River’s Secret Garden is happening at 4072 Caves Road, Wilyabrup WA and is a once in a lifetime event programmed for Saturday, November 16th, from 5:30 to 10 PM. This amazing vegetable degustation dinner occurs under the stars in one of the area’s most exotic settings.
The meal is a unique creation from the talented plant-based skills of New York City top chef Amanda Cohen and Margaret River chef George Cooper that features the produce grown on Cooper’s personal farm. This one-time event also highlights Wilyabrup sub-region wines and plant-inspired non-alcoholic cocktails for an evening extravaganza not to be missed.
6. Seafood and Meat Dining Sensation:
The From Sea to Land evening dining event is a spectacular collaboration of Saint Peter’s seafood delights with Amelia Park’s meats and wines. This one night only sensation is occurring at the Amelia Park Winery Restaurant at 3857 Caves Road, Wilyabrup WA on Saturday, November 16th, from 7 to 11 PM.
The celebration consists of a 5-course menu that begins with an appetiser course that is followed by 3 main seafood and meat courses and ends with a decadent dessert course. Each course is paired with the perfect award-winning Amelia Park reserve wines. Diners will enjoy the commentary offered by the Amelia Park winemaker, Jeremy Gordon. Wine lovers will appreciate knowing that Amelia Park winery has earned the title of Margaret River’s best cellar door by the Australian Gourmet Traveller Wine for the past 3 years.

7. Cabernet Tasting and Long Lunch with Celebrity Wine Aficionados:
The Cape Mentelle International Cabernet Tasting and Long Lunch event occurs on Friday, November 15th, from 10 AM to 4 PM at Cape Mentelle, 331 Wallcliffe Road, Margaret River WA.
While this highly celebrated annual event is heralded as one of Australia’s biggest wine tasting traditions since 1982, it is now a landmark participant in the yearly Gourmet Escape event. For the 2019 celebration, the guests will experience the tasting of 20 different exceptional vintage 2016 cabernets from the finest cabernet regions in Bordeaux, Tuscany, Napa Valley, and Western Australia.
Even more impressive is the attendance of celebrity wine aficionados James Halliday and Matt Kramer. The cabernet tasting is followed by a long lunch created by a leading Western Australia top chef, Kate Lamont. The lunch menu will feature fresh regional produce and the dishes are paired with cabernets from the tasting session.
